On October 5th I left right after breakfast with these ladies for a full day of exploration. Everything went smoothly. We were not in a rush and we managed to see everything and more that we wanted.
Rachel, Staisha, Rachel and Liddy at the top of Christ the Redeemer Church tower.
The Cathedral of St. James in the Armenian Quarter of the Old City was an experience I will never forget. We arrived at the church just in time to be present for their service. We were the only tourists in there.
The priests in red cloaks sang in unison, their voices echoed throughout the cathedral.
They gave each of us a candle to hold. Then monks wearing black cloaks with pointed caps came and joined the singing. One man recited prayers in one of the deepest voices I have ever heard. The air was thick with mysticism and incense.
Ceiling and chandelier in cathedral.
Lamps hanging from the ceiling.
Father and sons. Perhaps walking home from synagogue.
Families returning from morning synagogue service.
Sukkot.
Happy, happy
The room of the Last Supper.
Sukkot on the deck.
Schindler's grave. The difference one man made in the world is unbelievable. His grave has rocks on it out of respect because flowers would not last long here. I really want to watch the film so I can better understand what he did.
Dormition Abbey. Beautiful mosaics.
St. Peter in Gallicantu. The church has been significantly restored and renovated.
The basement of St. Peter in Gallicantu used to be a prison. Possibly the place where Christ was held before his crucifixion where the soldiers whipped and mocked Him.
Trekking back home. We live at the top of Mt. Scopus and in order to reach the Old City we have to go down a valley and up a hill. Our travels on foot always seem to be uphill both ways.
Okay, why are you wearing a red robe with a black hood in the fourth picture with the candle? It's supposed to be all red or all black.
ReplyDeleteStunning. Thank you for sharing since I'll probably never get to go there.
